Sample trial website

A good and great free trial landing page can be the difference between getting one hundred versus a thousand signups a week.

In this article, we will break down everything you need to know to build a world-class free trial landing page. There are two reasons for your product-led company to have a free trial landing page. Most people get the first purpose but miss the second one.

But the second purpose of getting visitors excited to use the product on your free trial landing page is equally important. For customers to experience the total value of your product, they may need time to adjust to new technology or dashboard features.

An effective landing page can help motivate and remind users why it's worth sticking around to figure out your product. A successful free trial landing page converts visitors into leads. Every page should include three must-have components, and companies can then integrate additional elements into their design depending on their needs.

Instead, each company should evaluate the needs of its users to determine additional features that enhance the effectiveness of your free trial page. Testimonials showcasing customers raving about your product might be the social proof a visitor needs to sign up for your free trial instead of leaving your website.

For this second scenario, your product requires a Gmail plugin. Remember that fantastic design elements in the example might not be required for you to build a kickass free trial landing page. Zendesk offers customer service software and sales customer relationship management CRM.

The company promotes its free trial and the option to view a demo on the homepage above the fold content viewed before scrolling. Clicking Start your free trial takes you to a nine-step registration process, beginning with your work email.

The bold purple Get Vidyard Free button demands attention when you open the homepage of Vidyard. At the right is a peak at a general Vidyard dashboard playing a live video to spark curiosity. Appcues has a Start Building for free button alongside a demo option on its homepage.

After signup, you can start enjoying your day trial and then have the option to upgrade. Smartlook provides session recording and behavior analytics tools.

Instead, the free trials are on the Pricing page under the paid subscriptions. The page elements are simple. You can either sign in with Google or Microsoft or create a free account using your name, work email, job title, and set an eight-character or more password.

But here is where the landing page gets exciting and differs from other examples in our list. The initial email registration takes you through a two-step setup process. The little video of a cute dog and different platform features showcased on the left entice you to keep going.

Lucidchart is an intelligent diagramming application. The company has a Sign-up Free button on its homepage. Unlike other SaaS businesses, the customer journey to inputting their data on the free trial landing page differs.

The benefits of the Free plan are highlighted in orange. But this first step lets users see what additional features are available with the different paid plans.

The Individual and Team plans have the option to Try it free. Finally, arrive at Step 3. Here, before you can start your 7-day trial, you need to submit your payment details. Chargify is a subscription billing service for B2B SaaS companies. Interestingly, in , the company removed the free trial offer and replaced it with demos.

Musicians, authors, podcasts, and coaches use ConvertKit. It may be the element of mystery that entices creatives to sign up and try CovertKit for free.

How exactly does CovertKit serve you? You create a new account using your email and password no character specification listed and tick the box that you comply with the terms of service and privacy policy. The majority resembled the free trial page of Smartlook example 4 in the section above.

It was short, to the point, and focused on getting you into the product. However, others took you directly to the pricing page once you clicked "Get Started.

With that said, I can understand why Litmus would do this with that line of reasoning. Or even a photo of a person who looked like he was wasting time with CRO?

What does that even look like? Take a look at the spacing of the calls to action. I think this is a great technique, but it can also backfire. Look at these quotes! Consumers are smart. It needs some focus and some more powerful construction. Heck no. Professionals want to make their lives easier with actionable insights into their data.

Focus on telling the story behind that. Each sentence should draw in the visitor and help to tell the story. Redesigning the page to bring more emphasis to the form should remove some of the friction.

This page from Google Play is a good example of what I was talking about with Qualaroo. Either configuration can work, but you need to test it out to find out what will work for your audience. Bright colors grab attention for sure, but they can also backfire.

When a color like the blue has text over it, it can cause readability issues. This is because the contrast between the text and the background is reduced so it makes it harder to read. The text on this landing page could easily be larger, which would make things easier to read.

Not only does a larger text size increase visibility of each word, but it shortens the lines on the page so that visitors can scan copy faster.

Also, the paragraphs could be shorter to improve readability. Having long paragraphs creates blocks of text that are both difficult and unappealing to read. With a few tweaks you should be able to get more from your free trial landing pages, onboard more leads and make more sales.

No navigation menu helps keep visitors focused on the page and not distracted by other links near the headline. The main CTA is a bright color with clear copy that stands out from the largely white background.

Without those present, it may not be clear to marketers if the platforms they need a scheduler for are supported. Sprig What the page does well: A clear product dashboard image provides potential users with a clear visual representation of the product.

This can help buyers understand the interface and functionalities, making it easier for them to assess whether the platform aligns with their needs. Minimal copy in the hero section makes it easy for visitors to skim and find information relevant to their decision.

Customer logos as you travel past the hero section continues to build trust and highlights the caliber of companies that use Sprig. Contentful What the page does well: The headline conveys the benefit immediately.

Scannable copy in digestible bullet points helps visitors see the value of Contentful without being overwhelmed by information. Social Proof above the fold highlights a wide range of brands, from retailers to tech companies to alcoholic beverages, highlighting that this platform can be used by companies in any vertical.

No imagery may lead to less distraction, but we would suggest adding a visual or video of the platform for visitors to see. Wrike Wrike, a work-management platform, understands that paid search ads should be connected with dedicated landing pages. The short form requiring only an email reduces friction and increases the odds a visitor will convert.

It also underscores that no credit card is required for the trial. The header image is a gif that cycles through different views of the Wrike platform, giving potential users a sneak peek of what to expect. Social proof in the hero section highlights a wide array of platforms, from video games to ride shares, highlighting that Wrike can work for a multitude of industries.

The live chat option opens in a new tab, away from this landing page. Offering live chat is okay as long as the visitors stay on the same page. the demo. Supermetrics What the page does well: The headline and secondary headline clearly state the offer, which helps prospects quickly decide whether to read on.

Customer logos show that high-profile companies use Supermetrics to grow. The short form reduces friction and increases the odds that visitors will opt for the trial. Adding use cases could better showcase how potential users could leverage the platform.

Semrush What the page does well: The orange CTA button stands out on the page and draws attention. This page is pretty solid. Notice how Dropbox only asks for the bare essentials on this free trial page?

They realize that there is plenty of time to ask for additional information later like company name and location. This page stays clean and to the point. Icons can help people understand a point, and Dropbox makes great use of to the bullets points and excellent visual representation.

The trouble with most testimonials is that they are boring. They use a quote that actually talks about a pain point that relates to their service: backup recovery.

What do you think is more powerful? A statement about a benefit, or a testimonial that demonstrates it? There are always things to test on a landing page. Even though Dropbox has done some great things on this page, there are elements that they could test for improvement. Never miss an important call again Get a toll-free number and a virtual assistant at one low price.

There is some really great selling copy below the fold, but everything above the fold seems like an afterthought.

First of all, there is no reason for me to watch this video. Plus, none of the copy even mentions the video, so why should I watch it? Second, the green box that stands out only has a list of features in it. As a small business owner I might not have considered voicemail transcriptions before.

Why not tell me why I should care? How about this:. There are some decent testimonials on this page so why not show them off? I would test putting one testimonial directly under the first call to action.

I especially like the use of visual cues to point out the important parts of the page. However there are a few things that I think would be worthy of a test. I find that the placement of the web form is strange.

Strong horizontal lines — such as the difference between the light grey background and the bright orange section — can cause a visitor to stop reading down the page and completely miss the form. Unless you watch this video, there is no indication on the page of what GoToMeeting actually does.

Granted, lots of business owners would know the brand, but you can never take for granted that your visitors will understand your business model. The broken code actually turns this page into just a form and a quote — not ideal for conversions.

Build Profitable Relationships Nimble simplifies contact management so that you can get to work. There is no explanation of why I am filling in this field, or what will happen when I do.

I would cut this field out entirely and ask for this information on a later step where there is more time to explain. As with all free trials, there is a time investment involved with signing up.

The primary purpose of a free trial landing page is to get people to sign up for your product. However, knowing which game you're optimizing for helps you make inevitable tradeoffs that benefit your business in the long term while potentially making no sense in the short term.

If this is the game you're trying to play, you must strip out everything on your free trial landing page that doesn't help people convert as easily as possible. Doing so might mean you stop asking for your user's phone number, mailing address, or even their Social Security Number.

You get the point. Typically you'll play the conversion game when you're in hypergrowth and trying to scale as fast as possible. When you're playing the game of understanding, you care more about understanding what makes your users "tick" than driving as many of these users through your funnel as possible.

It's a significant tradeoff to make if you're a pre-product market fit or don't have a good handle on who your ideal customer profiles are as a business. By taking this approach, you may decide to introduce additional friction to support and understand your users in the long run.

This additional friction doesn't necessarily have to be bad for the user. Suppose you've signed up for Notion example 6 above. But once you finally get into the product, it's customized to your user preferences, so it doesn't feel like a waste of time.

For an excellent example of this in action, review ConvertKit's free trial example 10 above and the questions they ask before you can sign up. If you're dealing with a high noise-to-signal ratio for users signing up for your product, you may proactively add more friction or steps to reduce the flow of leads.

Typically most product-led companies will do this when they don't yet have a good Product Qualified Lead metric to score users and accounts. Or maybe they want to make sure that users who sign up for their free trial know that they have to pay them a good chunk of change at the end of the trial.

You can see that Intercom and Litmus all took this path. I challenge you to never stop testing. Your free trial landing page is one of the most valuable pages on your entire website. Treat it as such, and you're going to see the benefits!

The hard truth is that without signups, you're not going to build a successful product-led business. Happy New Year.
